Why we need a Vector?

You might have heard the term "Raster to Vector",or read somewhere.

Wondering what is Vector is?Or who cares,I don't even know what a Raster,"so what gives  man"?

Well you should start caring if you deal with digital pictures, unless you live in cave with no technology or civilization nearby at all.

But if that is not that the case read on. :)

Raster is defined as in Wikipedia as :
"In computer graphics, a raster graphics image is a dot matrix data structure representing a generally rectangular grid of pixels, or points of color, view able via a monitorpaper, or other display medium. Raster images are stored in image files with varying formats"

Ok you don't understand the lingo.Let me make it simpler, you know the normal digital images you deal with in your PC ,mobile, etc are #Raster Images.
Girl with Sign-Raster :Ms.Pretty Smile
The above image of girl is a raster image. Comprendo Amigo?
Has a pretty a smile too.

So why should you need a Vector if Raster picture is allright.
Actually the problem arises if you need the picture for designing especially a billboard. Then you need to zoom the picture.

So we open Ms.Pretty Smile in #Adobe  Photoshop:

Here is what the picture looks like when opened Photoshop:

Next we zoom the image and let us see:

After Being Zoomed in Adobe Photoshop

Now We cant use Ms.Pretty Smile in a billboard ,can we.This why we need a vector.

After zooming  the vector Image we can see she is still smiling with a clean teeth!

Some advantages of using vector:

  • Vectors are Re sizable .Can be resized to be able to print to Billboards big ads. This is done without loss in quality.
  • Smaller file size
  • Edibility to modify individual elements without affecting other parts of image.

Thanks for reading.
